A network of public spaces

The Zorrotzaurre of tomorrow has an environment characterised by its network of varied collective and public spaces.

Within the island, the structure of the network is defined by three axes – two on the edges and a central avenue that includes the tramline – crossed generously by local streets and pedestrian walks.

The open spaces are concentrated on the canal side, with major walkways on both banks and a linear park of 40,000m2 will be created in the central area of the island. The gardens of Botica Vieja will be extended and increased in size and connected by the new bridges to the open spaces on the island.

This network is complemented with interesting environments at both ends of the island as well as by open spaces that connect the canal to the pathway located on the riverbank. These “green fingers” of more than 5,000m2 cut across the island

and create a “spinal” structure to give a robust spatial structure.

This global structure allows a densely constructed environment to accompany the sensation of strong porosity of the buildings, allowing the future residents and workers to enjoy a rich variety of open spaces.

Every element will come together to create a background of varied textures for urban social life, As might be expected on an urban island, the careful design of the streets will favour reduced traffic and will prioritise the pedestrian. A new sequence of bridges will become an exciting new element of this public environment, mirroring the tradition already established up-river in the city centre.

This emphasis on the walkers’ city gives special importance to the diversity of materials that the landscape plan proposes; a variety of hard and soft materials that define different micro-environments throughout the island.
